Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy is a procedure used to treat various blood vessel problems. In particular, sclerotherapy can be used to treat spider veins and varicose veins.

During sclerotherapy, a solution is injected into the unwanted veins. The solution causes the target veins to immediately shrink, and additionally closes the "feeder veins" under the skin that cause spider veins to form, thereby making a recurrence of the spider veins in the treated area less likely. The patient's leg is then compressed with either stockings or bandages that are usually worn for two weeks after treatment. The treated vein will dissolve as the body naturally absorbs it. Often, multiple treatments over several weeks are needed to remove the veins completely.
